Sabrina, our beautiful family dog, is once again barking and leaping towards the treetops behind our house. She seems to think that, if she jumps high enough, she'll manage to get hold of one of those unsightly Turkey Vultures perched atop the trees. This is an everyday effort on her part. Then there's the time that she used her ferocious bark and intimidating growl to warn us of a threat looming outside. Nervously, I peered from behind the living room curtains, to see a dangerous green and yellow John Deere riding mower parked in my neighbor's yard across the street. She might not be the brightest canine out there, but she's ours and we love her.
I must confess, however, there have been times when I've caught a news story or YouTube video of some pet performing an incredible trick or act of heroism, and I find myself asking Sabrina, "What's up with that? Can't you do a little more to earn your Kibbles and Bits around here?" So step it up Sabrina, because there's been some amazing pets in the news lately and they're doing far more than chasing their tails and Turkey Vultures.
MOLLY - HURRICANE KATRINA SURVIVOR
Abandoned by her owners during Hurricane Katrina, Molly, an Appaloosa pony, was adopted by Kaye Harris, owner of a pony farm in St. Rose, Louisiana. Unfortunately, while on the farm, Molly was attacked by another rescued animal. A Pit Bull Terrier ripped into Molly's jaw, her belly, and bit all four of her legs. One leg became so infected that euthanasia seemed like it might be Molly's only option.
But Molly's owner and her vet, Dr. Allison D. Barca, refused to give up on this special animal. Doctors at Louisiana State University's veterinary hospital finally gave in and decided to amputate Molly's right foreleg below the knee and fit her with a prosthesis.
Molly has gone on to be a symbol of hope and renewal for the city of New Orleans and beyond. She has adapted to her prosthetic leg so well that she often asks for it to be put on by sticking out her amputated limb. But besides being a model patient, Molly has a real purpose in life. Molly has been an inspiration to others as she visits human patients at nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and shelters. A children's book has even been written about this amazing gal and the special relationship between people and ponies.
SERGEANT FAITH
Faith is a testament to her name. Born with only her two hind legs, Faith has learned to walk upright, just like us humans. But she is more than a two-legged dog, she is a commissioned sergeant in the United States Army at Ft. Louis in Seattle, Washington. According to her owner, Judy Stringfellow, Faith can even differentiate between Army and Marine uniforms (though Ms. Stringfellow insists that Faith does not discriminate between the different branches of the armed forces). Faith travels and gives hope to military amputees and others who need a little "faith" to get through their devastating injuries.
ISABELLA - FOSTER MOTHER
The Safari Zoological Park in Kansas recently received a new bundle of joy - three adorable white tiger cubs. Unfortunately, their mother abandoned them one day after giving birth. That's when a Golden Retriever named Isabella stepped in.
Much to the delight of zoo owner Tom Harvey, Isabella has been nursing, licking, and cleaning the cubs, just as if they were her own. Because white tigers aren't as genetically stable as orange tigers, Isabella is playing a very important role in the life of these little ones.
Hey, Sabrina, have you been paying attention? I love you girl, but you can't get by on looks forever!
